Loved The Tanneries Spa and Resort. Amazing room, jacuzzi, steam shower, complimentary sparkling wine, complimentary breakfast…so many positives that it’s hard to list them all. I highly recommend this hotel.

Stunning Location and Design, but Service and Suite Fell Short

The design quality is outstanding - you can immediately tell how much thought went into both the aesthetic and the choice of materials.
Location
We knew when booking that the hotel wasn’t in the historic centre of Chania. It took us about 30 minutes to walk to the harbour, which was fine on a warm winter day, but I can’t imagine it being a comfortable walk in the summer. That said, the setting itself is magnificent. The hotel is surrounded by old houses, some still derelict, which adds to the charm, but the real highlight is the sea and the rugged coastline. The views - especially at sunset - were absolutely stunning, creating a peaceful and almost magical atmosphere.
The indoor pool was on the smaller side but was heated and never too busy when we used it. There were only three loungers, which might be an issue in high season, but we found it very relaxing.
Room (Presidential Suite)
We booked the Presidential Suite, mainly for the panoramic views, the wood-burning stove, and the jacuzzi. While we knew in advance that it had two bedrooms (despite only two of us travelling), the layout was underwhelming. It was essentially two separate bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms on different levels. The jacuzzi bath was on the lower level, but there was no real living space - just a sofa and a small coffee table. There was no dining table or kitchenette, which we would have expected from a suite of this category. The space didn’t feel particularly ‘presidential’ in terms of comfort or amenities.
Service & Recognition
Given that we had booked the best (and most expensive) room in the hotel, we didn’t expect over-the-top treatment, but small gestures - like a welcome letter or a bottle of local wine - would have been appreciated (we did receive 4 small cookies though). There was no personal welcome from the duty or general manager, and given the hotel’s history and renovation, a short introduction to the property would have been a nice touch.
Restaurant
Breakfast was excellent—attentive service, a good selection of options for a small hotel, and an à la carte menu with freshly prepared dishes.
For dinner, we had the Valentine’s set menu, which featured six courses—five of them seafood. We love seafood, so this wasn’t an issue for us, and the quality and presentation were superb. The service was impeccable, and the sommelier was particularly outstanding - knowledgeable, passionate about local wines, and an absolute pleasure to interact with.
However, when we dined off the regular menu the next night, the experience wasn’t as strong. My grilled octopus was overcooked and rubbery, lacking flavour, while the beef cheeks were excessively salted to the point that I couldn’t finish them. The sauce was rich and aromatic, but the saltiness overwhelmed everything else.
The final bill was also unnecessarily confusing, with multiple items added and then deducted, making it unclear what we had actually been charged for.
Check-Out
This was the most disappointing part of our stay. We had arranged for an early taxi (around 5 AM) to catch a flight. When we arrived at reception, the staff member on duty didn’t speak English and simply showed me a handwritten note listing outstanding balances for the departing guests. We paid, but when I asked for a receipt, he reacted in a way that was both uncomfortable and, for some, might have felt confrontational-pointing at me and speaking in Greek as if I had asked for something completely unreasonable.
After we left, I emailed the hotel requesting the bill, which they sent with an apology. However, the whole situation could have been easily avoided if:
(a) they had informed us the night before that there would be no English-speaking staff in the morning and invited us to settle the bill in advance;
(b) they had simply slipped the bill under our door with a polite note; or
(c) they had prepared the bill so the morning staff member could hand it to us once we had paid.
Overall
We were really excited about this stay, and in many ways, we did enjoy it - particularly the location, the stunning natural and urban surroundings, and the beautifully designed property. However, the Presidential Suite didn’t fully meet expectations, and service - especially at check-out - fell short. Given the high-end positioning of the hotel, a little more attention to detail in these areas would make a significant difference.

Excellent in overall quality, hotel design, staff, cuisine and location.

Staying for several days at the Tanneries Hotel is one of the nicest hotel experiences I have had for a long time. The staff were exceptionally kind and professional, the rooms are extremely comfortable. The hotel is inspirationally designed with excellent quality throughout. The resteraunt food is first class, not only the decor, the standard of the kitchen but also and very much, the quality ingredients, presentation, flavours and quantities. The health spa is also well designed and perfect for the size of the hotel and located with views across the sea and to the old town of Chania. I found the power jet within the pool helpful in working out in the morning and the gym has a good range of fine quality equipment.

Unique place in Chania

The hotel is rich with carefully designed details. The rooms opening up to the sea are very comfortable, large enough and perfectly equipped with everything you might expect. Friendly staff and the unique location make this hotel a true jewel.
