Situated on the outskirts of the lovely village of Coggeshall next to the church this historic Inn was a wonderful, peaceful get away. The bedroom had been refurbished to a high standard whilst retaining it's historic charm. The staff were welcoming and friendly. Would definitely stay here again.

Room absolutely stunning! Bed really comfortable, bathroom enormous and spotless. Loved the breakfast hamper really nice touch.
Only downside was the noisy pub downstairs, would be really difficult to sleep. We made the decision to go down and have a drink, the locals and staff were very welcoming so we made the most of it 😊.

Room was excellent. En-suite was fantastic. Very clean and good stay. It is a public house and music finishing at midnight all good for us on first night but music being slightly turned down and finishing between 3 and 4am not so considerate for guests.

Not a four star hotel

I was very disappointed with our stay at the Woolpack, which I understood to be a 4* hotel. I prepaid a booking for a DeLuxe King room and emailed to book dinner the day before we were to arrive. The staff on our arrival were friendly and helpful, but the facilities were far from satisfactory or as represented on the Woolpack’s website, on TripAdvisor nor on Booking.com. Access to our charming room was via a difficult stair with no rail (impossible to instal on account of the listing of the building). The ensuite bathroom was not directly accessible from the room and up and down one or two steps. This was a problem for us as we are in our 80s and my husband is physically disabled with dementia. There was no other room available. The manager helpfully provided a water jug so I could avoid my husband breaking his neck trying to go to the loo in the night. On asking about our dinner booking, my email had not been received, and I was told there was no restaurant, though pizza was offered in the garden. Fortunately, it was a fine evening. The bar inside was heaving that evening and there was loud music so we spent the evening in the churchyard next to the hotel. On returning around 9.30 we retired to our room but it was immediately above the noisy bar. I was told it was karaoke night, which was advertised on the pub’s website, but the website said karaoke was on Thursdays and this was Friday. The pub’s licence for that night was to 1 am. My husband was traumatised by the noise. I did complain to the manager who agreed the situation was unsatisfactory and said she would arrange a refund for us. But next morning she was off duty and only the chambermaid available, who said only the owner could deal with complaint or refund anyway. Neither of us slept. I had to stay awake all night to ensure my husband used the water jug. Next morning, with no restaurant, there was equally no breakfast. A hamper in the room provided a fairly comprehensive breakfast but with no table or sit up chairs this was less than satisfactory for us. Despite the chambermaid saying she would ask the owner to contact us about our stay, this has not happened. I phoned the pub three times to ask for that contact later but have had no response from the owner. Not an impressive example of someone in the hospitality trade.
Charming as the building and the staff are, this pub is not a four-star hotel. I could at the very least have expected contact from the ownership in acknowledgement that the facilities had not met our expectation or need. Having accepted the stay out of necessity, I cannot claim redress from my credit card company under the Chargeback scheme, though I am now making a claim for misrepresentation. All fine if you are looking for a charming but rowdy pub with accommodation but not if you want a comfortable hotel.
